Adhnon Marrtab has been jailed for nine years after admitting rape and sexual assault

A rapist who stalked a lone woman after she left hospital and then attacked her has been jailed for nine years.

Adhnon Marrtab made lewd comments to the woman and chased her into a church yard where he raped her in the early hours of October 25 last year.

The 24-year-old was arrested after an image of the victim’s attacker was circulated by police.

Marrtab pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault after he was found to have a bite mark on his shoulder which matched the account given to detectives by the victim.

The 28-year-old woman had just been discharged from hospital at 3.45am and was making her way home when she was targeted by Marrtab.

Shortly after getting off the bus at Golders Green Station, she made a trip to a local shop before crossing the road and waiting for another bus to take her closer to her home.

She then noticed a man, who has since been identified as Marrtab, crossing the road and walking towards her.

Despite shouting out in an attempt to discourage him from speaking to her, he got closer and grabbed her phone out of her hand.

As she pushed him away and tried to escape, he grabbed her and kept following her, making sexual comments as he did so.

Marrtab then raped and assaulted the victim in a church yard before she escaped and jumped over a large fence before running off to seek help.

Following the incident, detectives worked closely with the Met’s forensic teams to identify the unknown offender.

An examination of CCTV for a bus showed Marrtab boarding a bus and tapping on his Oyster card.

A history of his travel was later obtained and officers were able to analyse a pattern of travel that emerged.

He was circulated as wanted on police systems and a manhunt was launched.

With the assistance of the Met’s Violence Crime Taskforce, Marrtab was arrested on October 31, 2021, outside a hotel in Wembley and was subsequently charged.

After his arrest, Marrtab was booked into custody and a body search was conducted, revealing a large bite to his shoulder.

Detectives recovered the clothing Adhnon Marrtab wore during the horrific attack last year

This further linked Maartab to the offence as the victim had divulged to detectives that during the attack she bit the perpetrator with strength and expected this would leave a noticeable mark on his shoulder.

Detective Constable Pat Leonte, who led the investigation, said: ‘This was an extremely challenging investigation and we went to great lengths to identify and reprimand Maartab.

‘We trawled mass amounts of CCTV footage across multiple days and worked alongside various specialist teams in pursuit of him.

‘Thanks to the brave victim’s compelling evidence and the work of the wider investigation team, this dangerous man is now behind bars.
