Cristiano Ronaldo is not expected at Manchester United training for a second consecutive day, The Athletic understands.

United’s international players were due to return to Carrington on Monday but Ronaldo was absent, with “family reasons” cited.

It is currently unclear when the Portugal international will return, with United scheduled to leave on Friday for their tour to Thailand and Australia.

The Athletic reported over the weekend that Ronaldo, 37, would like to leave if United receive a suitable offer this window.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss his situation and the idea of him switching to Chelsea.

Bayern Munich are also thought to have been told about his situation, while Napoli are understood to be interested.

It is understood the view from United is that Ronaldo is not for sale this summer.

Ronaldo has 12 months remaining on the contract he signed when he rejoined United last summer from Juventus. There is also an option in his contract for a further year.

He scored 24 goals in all competitions last season, finishing as United’s top scorer, but was unable to help them qualify for the Champions League.

A lack of Champions League football this coming season and the determination to fight for trophies are thought to be part of the reasoning behind his desire to leave.

Ronaldo is understood to have been concerned about the lack of progress on and off the field, while a clause in the contracts of all United’s players stipulates a salary cut of 25 per cent as a general rule.

Erik ten Hag is hoping, meanwhile, to add to his ranks. Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia has been completing the final stages of his medical, while The Athletic revealed on Monday that Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to join the club.
