Dino Melaye reacts to Orji Kalu’s release from prison
Former Senator representing Kogi Central at the National Assembly, Dino Melaye has reacted to the Supreme Court Judgement nullifying the conviction of the Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu.
Zolexrep reports that the apex court ordered the retrial of Kalu’s corruption case on Friday and was released from Kuje Prisons after a 7-man panel cancelled his conviction.
The apex court, in a unanimous verdict delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, declared that the conviction null and void.
Justice Eko declared that Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Kalu, was already a justice of the Court of Appeal when he ruled and sentenced Kalu and his co-defendant.
He held that a Justice of the Court of Appeal cannot operate as a judge of the Federal High Court, and ordered the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign the case for trial.
Reacting to the development, Melaye expressed his happiness over the nullification of Kalu’s conviction.
He wrote: “Orji Uzor Kalu is free”
