Lampard eyeing ambitious move for £60million-rated Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba this month.
Frank Lampard is eyeing an ambitious move to land £60million-rated Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba this month.
Lampard has axed Marcos Alonso from the Blues’ starting line-up since taking over from Maurizio Sarri in the summer.
Emerson Palmieri has failed to convince his manager he is the answer to the problem position in the opportunities he has been given.
Lampard has instead switched captain Cesar Azpilicueta from right-back to left-back, with Reece James coming in on the right.
And while Azpilicueta has performed well, he is not a natural in that spot.
The fact Chelsea’s transfer ban has been lifted means Lampard can now look to add to his squad this month.
Mirror understands that Chelsea are keen to see if a deal for Alaba, regarded by some as the best left-back in the game, can be struck.
The 27-year-old won his eighth Bundesliga title with the German giants last season.
But he has just 18 months to run on his contract at the Allianz Arena and the Blues are ready to offer him the chance to try something new in the Premier League.
Alaba, who has played 72 times for Austria, is the youngest player to be capped by his country, having made his debut in 2009 when he was 17.
He came through the ranks at Austria Vienna before joining Bayern in the same year he made his international bow.
Not only would Alaba solve Lampard’s left-back issue, he would also bring some vital experience to Chelsea’s young side.
Lampard has put his faith in academy products James, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Callum Hudson-Odoi this season, as well as 21-year-old US star Christian Pulisic.
And while they have flourished there is a clear need for some experience in the side to help them continue their development.
