3 – 1:- Otamendi (20′) ,Aguero (38′) ,Aguero (56′) ,Stephens (75′)
Sergio Aguero scored twice as Manchester City made light work of Southampton in the EFL Cup, the holders easing into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
Reeling from their 9-0 trouncing at the hands of Leicester City last Friday, Southampton – in their first of two outings against City in the space of four days – were little match for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Nicolas Otamendi and Aguero had City comfortably in control by half-time, with the latter on hand to nudge City further ahead 11 minutes after the restart.
Mahrez’s long shot too straight
Mahrez is causing Southampton some problems here early on as he drifts inside from the right. There are a lot of people between him and the goal and he curls his effort around the defenders, but it’s saved by McCarthy.
Two stops in quick succession from Claudio Bravo looked to have ended Southampton’s hopes of a consolation, but Jack Stephens headed in with 15 minutes remaining to ensure Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side restored some pride.
GOAL! Man City 1-0 Southampton (Otamendi)
The corner is initially played short by City and Silva puts a good cross into the middle. Otamendi rises highest at the far post and heads his effort back across goal and into the back of the net.
Aguero’s free kick wide out
City have a free-kick right on the edge of the box and Aguero is standing over it. He curls his effort around the wall, aiming for the top right corner, but the shot is well wide of the target.
GOAL! Man City 2-0 Southampton (Aguero)
It’s a great cross into the six-yard box from Walker and Aguero is left unmarked in the middle. It’s a simple tap-in into an empty net for the City captain as he doubles their lead.
GOAL! Man City 3-0 Southampton (Aguero)
Mahrez’s shot from outside the box takes a big deflection off Bednarek and it looks like McCarthy has it covered until Aguero gets his studs to the ball to send it past the goalkeeper and over the line. The Southampton players are asking for offside, but he timed his run perfectly.
Mahrez’s shot blocked
It’s a brilliant cross into the box from Foden on the left and Southampton just don’t clear it. Jesus gets on the end of it but touches it onto Mahrez who takes his shot first time but Bednarek recovers well to block it.
Bravo makes a decent save
Out of nowhere, Southampton have finally had their first effort on goal. Boufal weaves his way through City’s defence before curling a shot towards the bottom corner from outside the box. It’s on target and Bravo gets fingertips to it to send it wide.
GOAL! Man City 3-1 Southampton (Stephens)
Stephens’ movement in the box to get ahead of Angelino is great as he once again gets on the end of Ward-Prowse’s cross. This time he heads his effort over Bravo and into the back of the net to pull a goal back.
