Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle: Marcos Alonso hands Blues 5th consecutive win as Barkley got injured

Barkley caps disappointing day after failing to create and going off injured

Is it embarrassing pictures of him in a Tottenham shirt as a toddler? Clandestine audio of him admitting Steven Gerrard was a far better midfielder for England than him?

Chelsea extend their winning run to five matches in all competitions courtesy of their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United this afternoon.

Marcos Alonso’s strike was enough to secure the three points on a day where quality finishing in the final third was an issue for both teams.

The Blues exposed the visitors down the right before Callum Hudson-Odoi teed up Alonso, who struck his drive through Martin Dubravka to find the back of the net for the winner.

Willian should do better from close range. Hudson-Odoi gets the better of Yedlin and he lifts a cross into the middle for the Brazilian to attack. He connects with his header at the back post, only to nod his attempt wide of the left post.

Hudson-Odoi is the architect again for the Blues as he tees up Mount in the box. The midfielder turns and shoots, only to blast his effort straight at Dubravka. Either side of the Newcastle keeper and that was a goal.

Willian probes in the right inside channel and he cuts inside to shoot on his left foot, but he places his strike wide of the target.

The Spaniard drives with his left foot towards goal and his effort has enough power to creep through the grasp of Dubravka into the net. Pulisic starts the attack with a driving run into the right inside channel before pulling back a cross into the middle. Hudson-Odoi helps it on to Alonso, who does the rest with a neat finish.
