THE Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has asked the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, to put the country above their personal interests in the discharge of their duties.
Lawan defeated his contender, Senator Ali Ndume, while Gbajabiamila beat Umar Bago to emerge the leaders of the 9th National Assembly on Tuesday.
While congratulating them, Sanwo-Olu said their victories were a result of focus, hard work, resilience and team spirit.
The governor said the elections at both chambers of the National Assembly were a clear indication of a deepening democracy in Nigeria.
“In the past, such elections were either not as transparent as what we witnessed today (Tuesday) or the emergence of the leaders were remotely controlled from outside the hallow chambers,” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement.
He advised the newly elected principal officers of the National Assembly to work closely with the executive for speedy and efficient service delivery to Nigerians.
He also urged the opposition to work with Lawan and Gbajabiamila, noting that politicking was over and time to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians was now.
